After an ankle injury kept him off the court for seven weeks, outside-hitter Taryq Sani led the Ryerson Rams to a 3-0 victory against the Royal Military College (RMC) Paladins at the Mattamy Athletic Centre Friday night.

The new recruit proved himself to be an asset for the Rams by ending the match with 12 kills and an ace. Xander Ketrzysnki also made notable contributions with nine kills and six aces while Greg Vukets got nine kills.

“This was a really good team win in the sense that we had a lot of good energy,” said Sani. “We did a good job of being a cohesive unit.”

The Rams and the Paladins both came out strong in the first set, closing at 25-18. Although the Paladins worked to build more momentum as they entered the second set, which ended 25-12, the Rams’ chemistry became evident as they maintained their lead and carried it through to the end, closing the third set at 25-14.

Head coach Matt Harris recognized the team’s endurance throughout the match.

“We came in nice and focused; we had a great week of training,” said Harris. “I’m just happy that our guys played hard right from the first whistle until the end.”

Harris also celebrated Sani’s return.

“It was great to get Taryq back on the court,” said Harris. “He’s worked really hard… and he had a great first match.”

With the victory over the Paladins, the Rams reach a 4-2 record. The Rams lost their first game of the OUA season to the University of Toronto Varsity Blues 3-1 on Oct. 26, but will have a chance to redeem themselves against their downtown rivals next Friday at the Goldring Centre.

The Rams will have to come back stronger than they were in October to defeat the Varsity Blues. This time, however, they’ll have the help of Sani.

“We gotta start from scratch again,” said Sani. “We started from scratch playing against RMC and [we need a] completely new game plan for U of T, [to] keep our energy, keep our momentum and keep our good team chemistry.”
