Each year at Canadian Music Week, the iHeartRadio FanFest brings together a mix of trending and emerging talent dominating Canadian airwaves. This year (May 8), that mix included the likes of “Happier” artist Marshmello, The Launch favourites Elijah Woods x Jamie Fine and producer/DJ Frank Walker, with special guests.
Scroll down for photos and inside scoop from each performance at the star-studded night.
Neon Dreams: This rising electro-pop duo from Halifax was one of the first acts on stage at iHeartRadio FanFest. They were the perfect crowd pumpers for the evening with their high-energy set and charged-up tunes, including recent radio hit “High School Dropout.”
Lu Kala: For fans of Adele and Lizzo, emerging Canadian artist Lu Kala is your next “must listen” artist. Her first CMW appearance was a special night for the star for many reasons. She stunned with her performance of single “Don’t Count Me Out” — a track that Lu Kala says “started the dream” and continues to rise up radio airplay charts here at home. Lu also shared on stage, “To be a black woman and an independent girl, being on this bill is a dream.” Expect much more to come from the powerhouse vocalist.
Frank Walker: Warming up the crowd for the night’s electronic headliner, rising Canadian DJ Frank Walker had no shortage of hits to drop, including collaborations with Astrid S and Tyler Shaw — the latter of which joined him on stage. Urban pop songstress Riley Biederer also joined Walker to close out his set with a performance of their single “Heartbreak Back,” an early contender for song of the summer.
Elijah Woods x Jamie Fine: The Launch veterans proved they’re still on top of their game, performing a mix of new releases and fan favourites like “Better Off” and the Ryan Tedder-produced “Ain’t Easy.” “Toronto, you’re a freaking favourite man,” exclaimed Fine. Excuse the pun, but it was certainly more than just a “fine” performance.
Tyler Shaw: There were no “kiss goodnight”s being handed out, but Tyler Shaw won the love and affection of the crowd at iHeartRadio FanFest. Shaw performed several songs off his recently released sophomore album ‘Intuition,’ including singles “With You” and “To the Man Who Let Her Go.” This summer, Shaw will join Rob Thomas and Max Frost on the road for Thomas’ Chip Tooth Tour.
Marshmello: Easily earning his headliner spot, internationally-known producer/DJ Marshmello drew his own sizeable audience while picking up at least a few new iHeart fans along the way. Marshmello’s flashy visuals complemented his upbeat, danceable music — sometimes featuring lyrics to aid the crowd, such as with Bastille collaboration “Happier.” Selena Gomez collab “Wolves” drew some of the biggest cheers of the night.
