Band breakups are an unfortunate part of life. The unofficial ones, like Zayn Malik leaving One Direction and the remaining four members going on an “extended hiatus,” as well as the official ones, like the Jonas Brothers calling it quits on record after eight years, both yank on the fragile heartstrings of fans everywhere. No matter how wildly successful and impactful their music may be, sometimes the glamour and glitz just isn’t enough, and it certainly wasn’t enough for the following five bands, whose eventual demises are historic.
Though Queen never officially broke up, following frontman Freddie Mercury’s death in 1991, the band was really never the same. Mercury’s stage presence and iconic pitch launched the band to all-star levels of fame and though members Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon continue producing albums and touring with vocalist Adam Lambert – they just announced a Toronto show for July 18! – the Mercury sized hole in Queen just cannot be filled.
Oasis’ farewell was amongst the most bitter. Brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher nestled their way into our hearts in the early 90’s with their chart-topping debut full-length album ‘Definitely Maybe.’ Oasis embodied the rock star persona, with good music, cool sunglasses, and lyrics that demanded to be shouted. Turmoil between the Gallagher’s ultimately led to Oasis’ sudden demise in 2009, proving that the rock’n’roll lifestyle is not the best stage for brotherly bonding.
*NSYNC’s quiet, quasi breakup left fans in the dark, nursing broken hearts for quite a while. The boyband heartthrobs announced a hiatus in 2002, after Justin Timberlake began pursuing a solo career outside of the band. Though they never officially announced a breakup, they haven’t produced any new music since the ‘hiatus,’ so it’s safe to assume the boys are done, unfortunately without so much as a bye bye bye.
2. Destiny’s Child
Destiny’s Child went through various ups and downs throughout their 15-year career, shedding members throughout, but their unofficial split happened in 2005. DC3 pulled an NSYNC and went on a never-ending hiatus, wherein members Michelle Williams, Kelly Rowland and Beyoncé Knowles pursued side projects. The iconic trio rivalled some of the best R&B groups of their time, and though their split was a sad day for DC3 fans, we got Queen Bey out of it, so who can really complain?
1. The Beatles
The Beatles were arguably the most influential and beloved bands of all time, and their break-up was not taken lightly. The quartet split in 1970 when Paul McCartney announced he was leaving the band. Rumours ran rampant as to the cause of the breakup, with some fans vilifying John Lennon’s wife Yoko Ono and others arguing Lennon and McCartney’s egos were getting in the way. No matter what the reason, the Beatles altered the course of music forever and thinking about their breakup still stings a little.
