At the end of every year, we reflect on the past months and look forward to new music on the horizon. While many of us are happy to leave 2016 behind, there is no denying that it was a great year for the music industry. The question is; can 2017 top it? Between old favourites and new faces, your playlists are about to get some great new additions.
Ed Sheeran – ‘Divide’
Release Date: Mar. 3
After a painful year-long hiatus, Ed Sheeran made his triumphant return to social media at the end of December, announcing the release of his third studio record. With the recent release of “Shape of You” and “Castle On The Hill,” Ed proved he is back as both singles quickly soared to the top spots on iTunes. Following two very successful records, Ed seems to be taking on a new sound, shifting away from his acoustic guitar-driven hits to more of a modern pop vibe. Either way, it’s gearing up to be a great new release from our favourite British singer-songwriter.
Drake – ‘More Life’
Release Date: TBA
We were teased by the 6 God himself back in October when he dropped four new tracks and announced the release of ‘More Life’ in late December. Since then, the project has been pushed back to later this year. The Canadian-bred hip-hop artist has seen wild success the past two years; between his surprise mixtape ‘If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late,’ collaboration with Future on ‘What A Time To Be Alive’ and his fourth studio album ‘Views,’ the expectations for his new mixtape are through the roof. Are we going to be reverting back to a more emotional side of Drizzy, or will we hear him lash out and talk back to his enemies? Only time will tell, but the city is ready to hear him again.
Lorde – TBA
Release Date: TBA
The New Zealand beauty was only 16 years old when she debuted with her first studio album, ‘Pure Heroine.’ Everyone was amazed by the maturity of her sound and her timeless talent despite her age. Ella, now 20, announced on social media she was working on her second album, much to the delight of her fans. She hinted at its release in November 2016, tweeting a photo of earbuds stating she wants “to hear it exactly how you will.” Hopefully her second album will be just as much as a hit as her last – exploring new sounds and taking pop music in a whole different direction.
Kanye West – ‘Turbo Grafx 16’
Release Date: TBA
My next album is titled “Turbo Grafx 16” as of now…
— KANYE WEST (@kanyewest) February 27, 2016
If anyone had a rough 2016, it was Kanye West. From his wife being robbed in Paris, his visit with then-President-elect Donald Trump to his hospitalization, Mr. West sparked constant controversy in the media. In late February 2016, he announced the name of his next album, ‘Turbo Grafx 16,’ on Twitter; but knowing Kanye and his surprises, we can’t predict his next move. West is well-known for taking risks in his music and changing the way people look at hip-hop and its elements. There has been no official word on the album quite yet, but it shouldn’t be anything short of amazing.
John Mayer – ‘The Search for Everything’
Release Date: Throughout 2017
This year marks almost four years since John Mayer has released an album. Luckily, fans won’t have to wait much longer to hear more from him. His return to blues and folk music starts Jan. 20 (today!), when Mayer will release the first wave of ‘The Search for Everything.’ He took to Facebook to debut the project along with releasing the single “Love on the Weekend” back in mid-November. Instead of releasing all 12 tracks at once, he has decided to release a few at a time throughout the year, making for a constant flow of great music from the “Gravity” singer.
Sylo Nozra – TBA
Release Date: March 2016
The underdog artist Sylo Nozra has been floating under the radar for some time, but with his electronic beats and relaxing vibe, he’ll fit right in with the Toronto music scene. His EP is a follow-up to his release last November on SoundCloud, called ‘this_era.’ Sylo produced ‘this_era’ independently, but on his next project he’ll have some help from Krinny and several others. His new EP aims to be a progression of this era, continuing with his unique sound and vocals.
