As Canadian music continues to make its way up in the world internationally, the nominees for the 45th annual JUNO Awards have been announced today.
All eyes are on The Weeknd, Justin Bieber and Drake – three Canadian artists, all who are actually from Ontario, who have dominated the music charts and are now the most nominated artists this year.
The Weeknd, Scarborough’s very own R&B artist leads the race with six nominations, including album, artist and songwriter of the year. Toronto rapper Drake and Stratford, Ont., native Justin Bieber follow closely behind with five nominations each.
Some young faces at the awards will be Vine singing sensation Shawn Mendes from Pickering, Ont., and Alessia Cara, a singer-songwriter from Brampton, Ont. and first-time nominee, who started her career posting covers on YouTube. Both artists are up for four nominations each.
The night will feature performances by Bryan Adams, The Weeknd, Alessia Cara, Scott Helman, Shawn Mendes, Dean Brody and more who have yet to be announced.
The televised award show ceremony will feature a tribute to Burton Cummings, a singer-songwriter and former lead singer for the Canadian rock band The Guess Who, as he is being inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
This year’s awards are being hosted live from Calgary on April 3 at the Scotiabank Saddledome, with a week of JUNOFest festivities running from March 28 – April 3.
All of the nominees are listed here.
