REVIEW: BAIO at the Drake

(By: Mackenzie Wong)

For those of you who’ve never stepped into the underground of The Drake Hotel particularly to the jazzy trance tunes of Baio, allow me to enlighten you. In other words, bear with me as I brag.

Christopher “Chris” Baio, more commonly recognized as the bass guitarist of Vampire Weekend and/or cousin of Steve Buscemi, has recently gone solo, his EP The Names released September 18th.  He performed some of his tracks on “Late Night With Seth Meyers” that very day and has been touring all over the world since. Vampire Weekends music has been referred to as Afrobeat- a mix of jazz, funk, and
highlife. That same beat is reflected in Baio’s own DJ’d songs as well as his performance. During his set, Baio leaped and spun back and forth (with style) between the mc and mix table, showcasing his incredible talent as an artist and rendering him a force to be reckoned with.

The show opened with a hip set from Modern Space, who will be releasing their EP later this year with Warner Bros. Music. They warmed up the crowd just enough to prepare them for the disco and funk that followed.

All in all, 10/10 would recommend. Great show, great people, chill vibes- what more could you ask for?
